Basic requirements for bringing pets into China

 

 

 

1、 Regulations on the number and types of pets brought into the country

 

 

 

1. Pets brought into the country are limited to dogs or cats.

 

 

 

2. Each passenger is only allowed to bring one pet per entry.

 

 

 

2、 The following two types of certificates must be attached

 

 

 

1. A valid animal quarantine certificate issued by the official exporting country or region (14 days prior to arrival, subject to an official institution's animal health clinical examination, including variety, scientific name, gender, coat color, date of birth or age; the number, date, and implantation site of the chip; and the results and dates of the animal health clinical examination).

 

 

 

Note: For pets from non designated countries or regions, the official quarantine certificate should also include the following information (see below for the list of designated countries or regions): ① The time and validity period of rabies vaccination, the type of vaccine (non active or recombinant vaccine), the product name of the vaccine, and the name of the manufacturing company; ② Rabies antibody titer test: Date of blood collection, name of testing institution, and antibody titer results.

 

 

 

Any alteration of the certificate content will result in the certificate being invalid!

 

 

 

2. Rabies Vaccination Certificate

Tip: The above two points are very important! If the pet does not meet the above quantity and type requirements, and cannot provide an official quarantine certificate or vaccination certificate, it will be returned or destroyed within a specified period of time!

 

 

 

3、 Pets should be implanted with effective electronic chips

 

 

 

Electronic chips must comply with international standards ISO11784 and 11785 (15 bit microchip codes only contain numbers). If the chip does not meet the above standards, a reader or writer that can read the implanted chip should be provided by oneself.

 

 

 

4、 Implement classification management based on the origin of pets

 

 

 

According to the requirements of the People's Republic of China for the quarantine of imported pets, China implements classified management of imported pets according to "designated countries or regions" and "non designated countries or regions".

 

 

 

While meeting the above three requirements, pets from the designated countries or regions below do not require quarantine and can enter through any port. After passing on-site quarantine, they will be released.

 

 

 

19 designated countries or regions: New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hawaii, Guam, Jamaica, Iceland, United Kingdom, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Cyprus, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, China.

 

 

 

So, except for the 19 countries or regions mentioned above, they are "non designated countries or regions"! Pets brought into China from "non designated countries or regions", in addition to meeting the above three requirements, also need to provide a rabies antibody test report (antibody titer or immune antibody quantity must be above 0.5iu/ml) issued by a laboratory accredited by Chinese customs. After passing on-site quarantine, they can be exempted from quarantine. If the report cannot be provided, the pet will undergo a 30 day quarantine.

 

 

 

At present, the General Administration of Customs has recognized 72 laboratories from 39 countries.

Tip: If quarantine is required, you need to enter from a port with quarantine conditions. If you bring your pet into a port without quarantine conditions, it will also be returned or destroyed within a specified period of time!

 

 

 

FAQ:

 

 

 

Q: What if I need to bring a guide dog, hearing dog, or search and rescue dog into the country?

 

 

 

A: Those who carry pets as guide dogs, hearing dogs, search and rescue dogs and possess official quarantine certificates, vaccination certificates, valid electronic chips, corresponding user certificates, and professional training certificates can be exempted from quarantine upon passing on-site quarantine. For such dogs that cannot only provide vaccination certificates, they can be vaccinated against rabies at qualified institutions upon application by the carrier.

 

 

 

 

Q: What if my pet falls ill during quarantine?

 

 

 

A: During quarantine, pets are generally not allowed to be taken out of the quarantine area. If the pet experiences abnormal health conditions, customs will promptly notify the carrier. Upon the application of the carrier, the customs may allow pet diagnosis and treatment institutions to enter the designated quarantine area for diagnosis and treatment; If the corresponding diagnosis and treatment items cannot be completed in the designated quarantine area, pets shall be diagnosed and treated in institutions that meet the diagnosis and treatment conditions and customs supervision requirements, and the customs shall supervise the diagnosis and treatment process.

 

 

 

Q: What if my pet is pregnant?

 

 

 

A: Pets that are elderly, weak, pregnant or lactating, or have previous illnesses may not be suitable for transportation or quarantine. Carriers should consult local veterinarians to ensure their affordability before carrying them into the country and assuming corresponding responsibilities.
